Arena is excited to welcome back audiences into our spaces and roar back with an ambitious, thrilling season packed with drama, humor, high-energy music and stories that bring us together. The season reflects Arena’s commitment to produce compelling, dynamic work that speaks to this moment in time as we navigate a new world. Arena is committed to creating work that reflects the voices of our communities and our country. As part of Arena’s mission to serve artists on a national, regional and local scale, two exciting collaborations will take place with American Conservatory Theater and Step Afrika!...
In July 2022, the world-premiere musical American Prophet: Frederick Douglass in His Own Words will make its debut in the Kreeger Theater. Filled with soaring new melodies and powered by Douglass’ own speeches and writings, Charles Randolph-Wright (Broadway’s Motown the Musical, Arena’s Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story) returns to Arena with this new work that celebrates the revolutionary legacy of one of history’s first freedom fighters. Cowritten and featuring new music by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Marcus Hummon, this daring and heart-stirring musical dramatizes Douglass as a young, fierce abolitionist and distinguished orator.

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater Announces Season to Begin in January 2021
*** The five-production season will celebrate works from acclaimed playwrights Lydia Diamond, Marcus Hummon, Britta Johnson, Eduardo Machado, Charles Randolph-Wright and August Wilson***
(Washington, D.C.) Arena Stage Artistic Director Molly Smith and Executive Producer Edgar Dobie announced the updated 2020/21 Season today during a livestreamed event with the Washington Post’s Peter Marks. The season reflects Arena Stage’s commitment to compelling, dynamic work that is packed with drama, humor, music and first-class storytellers. With this line-up, Arena Stage continues its commitment to strong representation for artists of color and women artists. The first three productions Celia and Fidel, Seven Guitars and Toni Stone were previously scheduled in the 2019/20 Season but were cut short due to COVID-19 restrictions. Musicals American Prophet: Frederick Douglass In His Own Words and Life After will round out the season calendar. The five-production season which includes two world premieres, one Power Play and two musicals will begin January 22. The season livestreamed event can be viewed here.

Cornelius Smith Jr. will play Frederick Douglass in the world-premiere musical, American Prophet: Frederick Douglass In His Own Words. Douglass' words power the soaring new melodies and original script from Grammy Award-winning songwriter Marcus Hummon and Charles Randolph-Wright (Broadway's Motown the Musical). Directed by Randolph-Wright, American Prophet runs July 10 - August 16, 2020 in the Kreeger Theater.

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces the world-premiere musical American Prophet, directed and co-written by award-winning playwright Charles Randolph-Wright (Broadway’s Motown The Musical) and featuring new music by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and co-script writer Marcus Hummon. The musical chronicles the life and legacy of one of the most notable human rights leaders of the 19th century, Frederick Douglass. Known as one of the greatest leaders of the abolitionist movement, Douglass was a prominent activist, author, orator and statesman. His own words power the soaring new melodies and original script. Directed by Randolph-Wright, American Prophet runs July 10 - August 16, 2020 in the Kreeger Theater.
